Affiliate Millionaire: Affiliate Marketing is Work!

I admit it. I always feel a certain sense of... well... unease about being an affiliate for a new product launch. It's not that I'm not discerning about who and what I'll promote, because I am. Quality and reputation mean everything to me. It's more because I know that people getting into the field of affiliate marketing have little idea about how many moving parts there are to it and how much work it really is.

The truth of the matter is that affiliate marketing is not for the feint at heart. There's a statistic out there somewhere that of all the people who start their own web business, only 3% will ever see success. Three fingers of one hand in a group of 10 people, that's all!

The biggest problem, I think, is that so many people starting out have no way of knowing all of the things that they will eventually become tasked with knowing. Take traffic generation, for example. There are so many different strategies to bring targeted traffic to your sites and each one requires a growing expertise. Currently, video marketing is in vogue and is here to stay, I'm betting. So, now we become experts at creating short promotional videos, Who would have thunk it, yeah?

Affiliate marketing takes time. Lots of it. It will eat into your family time, your weekends, your nights. It'll make you late for your job, miss your favorite TV shows and if you're doing it right it will always cost you something.

A word about cost: If you're doing affiliate marketing right, you'll need domain names, hosting, possibly a subscription to a membership site or two and, invariably, a couple of good, must-have products here and there. Having said that, the amount of free information, resources and tools available to the fledgling affiliate marketer is VAST. For my first successful campaign, I relied on free resources almost exclusively (I did pay for a domain name and hosting) and I am still getting residuals from it!

For someone who earns a living getting people to purchase products and services, often within the internet marketing arena, this all sounds like the anti-pitch. It's not. Nor is it some reverse-psychology gobbledygook. That's definitely not my forte!

My purpose, if I have one here, is just to inject my own little bit of truth into the broader concept of affiliate marketing. What has never failed to work for me has been to follow people who are actually successfully doing what I wish to do, too. I have my own favorites.

To this end, I have been watching a guy from Northern Ireland by the name of Andrew Fox - in part because I'm from Ireland, too - but mainly because I know that he isn't successful by accident. That's impossible in this industry. And, successful he is. I also know that he started out knowing nothing, but possessed that perseverance essential to success.

Andrew has made over $1M in commissions from email marketing alone. His upcoming product, and I'm not a big fan of the name, Affiliate Millionaire, is scheduled for launch on 23 Feb, 2010 and his entire reputation is on the line with it. Without going into every detail, essentially you get to look over his shoulder as he creates successful affiliate marketing campaigns using the very techniques that have earned him such success.

The real purpose in following someone like Andrew boils down to the one thing that is limited and invaluable - TIME. We all get into this business to have more free time, not less. But, understanding that affiliate marketing takes time, isn't it best to use our time most effectively to create the shortest distance between wanting and wealth? Oh, I almost forgot. Andrew's Affiliate Millionaire is really about getting results while going the low budget route.

You know, it does occur to me though that 3% is still a chunk of people. Consider the number of people on Facebook alone. 3% of them is 11.5 Million. That would be a lot of success stories. Now, I know that these 350 million people aren't looking to become affiliate marketers, but of all the people who try there are tens of thousands who will eventually succeed. That's somewhat heartening - at least to me.

Andrew Fox is one of the 3%. I am, too.
